Immunity Formula provides vitamins and minerals essential for immune functions to keep you healthy. Immunity Formula can help with autoimmune problems and allergies. Immune system support is important throughout the year, but particularly during times of seasonal change. A healthy immune system can help your body fight cell-damaging free radicals in your body. Free radicals are produced from things like car exhaust, smoking, even your own body can contribute to the premature ageing of your cells.
What is your immune system and how does it work?
The immune system is one of the most complex parts of the human body. It protects us from colds, flu and many other viral and bacterial pathogens. Diseases such as Hepatitis, and Lyme disease are at least partially caused by our immune systems inability to correctly identify and destroy the aberrant cells and invaders. This means that promoting a healthy body, through healthy diet, exercise, and even watching our thought processes and our emotional system, is vitally important to the overall health of our immune system.
The most outer level of the immune system is the skin, and the mucous membranes, such as in the nose and throat. These are physical barriers, and they have a protective effect from that point of view, as well as containing different elements like lactic acid (stomach), enzymes, lysosomes (a type of cell), and bacteria that help prevent infections and problems with foreign molecules. This is our ‘first line of defence’. Our blood supply contains immune system elements. It carries the lysosomes, interferon, and lactic acid, as well as being part of the properdin-complement pathway.
Our cells also contain what are called non-specific immune system elements, meaning they are not specialised to deal with a particular pathogen, but are just a general protective mechanism. These are collectively called phagocytes, and are classified in two ways. The first are the macrophages, such as the Kuppfer cells in the liver, and the osteoclasts in bone. And the second are known as polymorphonuclear leucocytes, such as neutrophils.
What ingredients are in Immunity Formula and what do they do?
Reishi mushroom: Reishi mushroom contains a high amount of polysaccharides which are essential for proper functioning of the immune system.
Astragalus: supports all aspects of the immune system. It increase phagocyte activity, the function of the natural killer cells, as well as increasing the levels of antibodies. Astragalus has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial properties.
Echinacea: stimulates different aspects of the immune system including the macrophages, interferon, and the lymphokines. It also helps prevent the breakdown of the connective tissue that invading organisms encourage, which lets them spread. It increases blood flow to the body’s tissues, as well as increasing circulation. Echinacea has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial effects.
Garlic: has anti-microbial, antihelmetic, anti inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and expectorant properties. The latter makes it great for respiratory infections, influenza, bronchitis, whooping cough, and clearing excess mucous. Garlic supports the immune system by increasing natural killer cells, and was used in the trenches in the First World War to treat gangrene.
Ginseng: increases resistance to the effects of stress and improves circulation and mental functioning. Health conditions contributed to be stress include increased acidity of the body chemistry, back pain, Crohn’s disease, depression, chronic diarrhoea, digestive disorders, hair loss, headaches, hypertension or high blood pressure, impotence, insomnia, TMJ syndromes (jaw pain and clicking), nervous and anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive behaviours, various skin conditions, and finally, ulcers.
Magnesium: is essential for hundreds of chemical reactions in the body. It functions as a co-enzyme for proper function of nerves and muscles, formation of bones and energy metabolism. Recent studies suggest that is of particular importance for proper heart function. Magnesium supplementation is necessary for many people. Some of the reasons for deficiency include: diet high in processed foods, high calcium intake, stress, intense physical activity and the use of certain medications.
Selenium: is recognised as an important element of nutrition. Selenium is an important part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione per-oxidase. It helps protect cells against the effects of free radicals that are produced during normal oxygen metabolism.
Vitamin A: When we consume beta-carotene, enzymes in the digestive tract that digest beta-carotene produce vitamin A naturally. The fat-soluble vitamin A is then stored in the liver, where it can remain for long periods of time. Vitamin A occurs naturally only in animal products like liver, kidney, butter, egg yolks, whole milk and fortified skim milk.
Vitamin C: is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for normal growth and development. There are numerous benefits that can be attributed to Vitamin C, including strengthening of bones and connective tissue, aiding in the healing of wounds, and increasing the performance of the immune system. Perhaps one of Vitamin C’s best attributes is its amazing anti-oxidant ability. It protects the fluids of the body such as blood from damage by free radicals. By strengthening arterial walls, it also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy blood pressure, as well as reducing tissue damage. Vitamin C protects the cells of the body and may prevent damage caused to them by ageing and arthritis.
Vitamin E: scavenges the body for harmful free radicals and annihilates them. By destroying cellular membranes, free radicals are responsible for a variety of health problems including atherosclerosis, diabetes, muscular dystrophy and rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin E defends all cell membranes in the body from oxidative stress, promoting better health and immunity from illness, while increasing virility.
Zinc: is an essential trace mineral. Every cell in the body needs this nutrient and hundreds of body processes rely on it, from the immune system and the enzymes that produce DNA to the senses of taste and smell. Although the body does not produce zinc on its own, this mineral is readily available in drinking water and certain foods. Even so, a surprising number of adults fail to get enough of this mineral through their diet. Zinc is believed to promote a strong immune system by, among other things, revitalising the thymus gland and its production of white blood cells. In addition, autoimmune diseases (chronic ailments linked to the improper functioning of the immune system, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or fibromyalgia) may also benefit from zinc supplementation. Interestingly, the presence of too little zinc has been linked to a decreased immune response in older people. Evidence shows that zinc is also useful in fighting cold and flu symptoms.
